Spring Tour

California Dreaming

Thank you for attending our 2018 Spring Tour! Don’t forget to mark your calendars for next year’s Spring Tour dates: April 26 and 27, 2019.

Spring Tour 2018: April 27 & 28, 10 am – 4 pm

Each destination on Gamble Garden’s 2018 Spring Tour is a manifestation of a uniquely personal take on ‘California Dreaming’, this year’s theme.  The visions are showcased in gardens that range from places of tranquility and retreat to the worldly, exotic and sophisticated, or the whimsical and playful.

In one garden, towering Redwood trees and a massive rose-covered arbor usher visitors into a courtyard. A golden gravel patio is ideal for casual dining on rainbow–colored chairs, surrounded by animal sculptures from Zimbabwe and an eye-catching waterfall.

Another garden features a dark green arch of Magnolia Grandiflor trees, reminiscent of open-air theaters, and sets the stage for a treasured bodhisattva sculpture, stone benches, and colorful planters.  All combine as an invitation to linger.

The tour will include a lush formal garden defined by paths and stone walls. Potted sago palms flank the front entry to the house and are repeated at the entrance to the back garden.  Soft fronds of dwarf date palms and the silvery glow of olive trees enhance the tropical feel. A massive wooden arbor shelters a dining area, where artists have turned heat lamps into garden sculptures. The long view leads the eye past verdant gardens to a lap pool and distant trees.

The story of ‘Margarita BOP’ is that it was a seedling that came up, sometime in the early 1980’s, at the bottom of a front porch. Every year it would flower like clear sky blue, fading to purple. It was never watered or maintained. The bicycles, skateboards and dogs ran over it tens of times, but it still looked beautiful at the bottom Of the porch. It is thought to be a hybrid between Penstemon heterophyllus and Penstemon laetus.
