One New Road is a San Francisco-based Atelier committed to promoting and preserving the continuation of traditional handmade crafts and skills in a world of mass production.
The collection of scarves is a unique combination of traditional textile techniques and contemporary design and color. The historic craft techniques used to weave, dye, and stitch these scarves have been passed down through generations. These hand-woven, hand-block printed, and hand-stitched textiles are made by artisans and producer groups spread across some of the most remote regions of India.
Each piece is hand-created using the finest quality natural yarn, but more importantly, these scarves help provide a sustainable livelihood to the artisan communities who create them. All handcrafted with artisan techniques, these scarves are made of silk, cotton, and natural materials with sustainable practices, minimal waste, and fair trade.
Born and raised in India, Shaheen spent numerous summers of her childhood with her grandparents in their colonial-style home in the heart of the western Indian “City of Joy” – Calcutta. One New Road is the street address of Shaheen’s grandparents’ home and was founded as a deeply personal tribute to the memory of her grandparents and a city she loves. After Shaheen earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Fine Arts and Textile Design, she spent several years at a textile mill designing furnishing fabrics for some of the world’s leading luxury furnishing brands. Soon after, she began working with Artisan communities in India, keeping her love for traditional textile techniques alive by designing and curating one-of-a-kind handcrafted scarf collections. Her inspiration is from simple forms, symmetry, and geometry found in nature, while exploring the textile technique as part of the creative process. She likes to work with vibrant colors influenced by my Indian roots, as well as Indigo and natural colors. Shaheen now lives in San Francisco, and her scarf collections are available online and at local Museum stores and boutiques in the US.
