JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Garden Director  

Reports To: Executive Director

Position Summary: 

The Garden Director is an experienced horticulturist, skilled leader and manager who thrives in a collaborative environment. The Garden Director leads the development of an inspirational, long-term strategic plan for the garden, directs garden operations, and collaborates with multiple committees to develop and implement horticultural education programs for adults and children. The Garden Director oversees the garden staff and helps to recruit volunteers to support this non-profit organization. Communication skills are essential for this position. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Garden Strategy, Design and Maintenance 

  • In consultation with the Board of Directors and expert advisors, provides vision and leadership in developing a long-term strategic plan for the garden
  • Designs and implements plans for the garden with an emphasis on
    • Defining, restoring and maintaining historic sections of the garden
    • Revitalizing demonstration beds 
    • Adapting the garden for a changing climate, such as by incorporating drought-tolerant plants and managing water use 
    • Managing the control of disease, weeds, and insects using primarily sustainable organic methods  
  • Serves as an ex-officio member of the Program Committee
  • Works closely with Garden staff and volunteers to develop and maintain the garden; takes a hands-on approach as appropriate
  • Coordinates seasonal plantings
  • Ensures the execution of general gardening activities such as pruning, deadheading, weeding, fertilizing, thinning, mowing, edging, pest control, irrigation/watering, installing plants and the use and maintenance of garden tools and equipment. 
  • Works with the Buildings and Grounds Chairman on maintenance and repair of the greenhouse, fences and other garden structures

Education, Events, and Communication

  • Plays a leadership role in using the garden as a springboard for horticultural education opportunities
  • Supports the following committees: 
  • Education Committee – to develop classes on gardening/horticulture
  • Children’s Events and Roots and Shoots Committees – to enhance Gamble’s offerings for school-age children, with a focus on science and the environment
  • Flower Arranger Committee – to beautify the historic Gamble home
  • Tours Committee – to ensure volunteer docents and garden guides are knowledgeable about the garden & to lead tours on occasion
  • Supports Gamble Garden’s events in the garden: Second Saturday, Greens Sale and Spring Tour-related activities
  • Supports programs for high school students, such as summer internships and community service opportunities 
  • Contributes to garden-related communications, including
    • Newsletter articles
    • Garden information and resources on the webpage
    • Resources for garden visitors, such as an online walking tour podcast 
  • Provides the Executive Director with reports on garden-related activities for the Board of Directors 
  • Represents as Gamble Garden to horticultural associations   
  • Advocates for gardens and their importance in communities
  • Personnel Management
  • Works with the Executive Director to maintain a productive, satisfying and safe working environment for employees and volunteers
  • Oversees a small staff of garden employees and seasonal interns
    • Submits annual performance reviews of garden staff to the Executive Director
    • Recruits new staff and interns as needed
    • Holds horticultural staff meetings at regular intervals
  • Manages contractors working on garden-related projects
  • Oversees and enriches the volunteer program to recruit and retain volunteers

Financial Management and Fund Development

  • Proposes an annual budget, with input from the Garden Manager, for garden improvements, maintenance, special projects, educational programs, equipment and supplies and plant sales
  • Follows Gamble Garden fiscal policies and manages the annual garden expenditures based on the budget approved by the Board of Directors
  • Assists the Executive Director with activities that provide financial support for the organization

 

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education: B.A. or B.S. degree in horticulture or related field.
  • Five or more years in garden management, maintenance, and operations, including experience training and supervising employees and garden volunteers, developing budgets and managing expenditures 
  • Experience in teaching and writing about horticulture/landscaping/environmental topics
  • Skilled in the use of computers, including email, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software 
  • Experience in identifying pests and diseases and controlling problems using organic methods
  • Knowledge of propagation, stock, inventory and supply management
  • Ability to train and oversee others in the safe use of equipment
  • Valid driver’s license

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Works indoors and outdoors
  • Occasional exposure to chemicals, fumes, dust, water, insects
  • Ability to lift or push up to 25 lbs. frequently, and up to 50 lbs. occasionally
  • Position requires frequent walking, standing, climbing, kneeling, grasping and occasional squatting, bending, reaching and repetitive hand and foot motion

 

Type of Position: Salaried, exempt. The position requires occasional weekend work.
