INSTRUCTOR BIO:

In 2006 Kristine Albrecht reclaimed an urban quarter acre on the East side of Santa Cruz, California that for years was weed-choked and fallow. She fed the soil and eventually planted over 1,000 dahlia tubers. Kristine’s focus and passion is hybridizing new dahlia varieties. She’s unique in that she develops hybrids not only for dahlia shows, but also for florists and designers.

Kristine is the president of the Monterey Bay Dahlia Society and on the Board of the American Dahlia Society. She shows her blooms at local and national dahlia shows. She has generated over 50 new dahlia varieties. Her varieties always start with her initials (KA’s) and are available from various tuber suppliers. Kristine has won the American Dahlia Society’s Derrill Hart Award twice and the Lynn B. Dudley Award once for her varieties KA’s Cloud and KA’s Khaleesi. In multiple years
Kristine has grown the largest dahlia shown in the U.S. In August of 2020 Kristine published a definitive step-by-step guide to dahlia breeding. “Dahlia Breeding for the Farmer-Florist and the Home Gardener” is sold in soft cover or Kindle ebook format by amazon.com.
Kristine has a large and lively Instagram account where she shares photos of her new varieties and engages in a world-wide discussion about all aspects of dahlias. Kristine lives in Santa Cruz, California with her husband Brion Sprinsock. The couple have two grown children.
